Field Notes - The Gardener's Creative Palette
The Gardener’s Creative Palette
Ideas for composing beautiful and engaging garden pictures with plants.
The Garden Curator Field Notes is a new series of digital notebooks to guide your creative garden making. Field Notes draws on my parallel paths as a professional artist, horticulturist and garden designer, to help you see your garden and garden-making anew through an artist’s lens. There’s a lot of gardening info out there, but Field Notes is a little different to the rest; it’s a friendly conversation, and a gathering of thoughtful and artful garden ideas gleaned over my 30+ years of garden making and art practice. Regardless of where you are gardening the principles remain the same, and Field Notes can provide inspiration for your own gardening path.
Field Notes - The Gardener’s Creative Palette digs into the creative and practical thinking behind garden composition, and those special garden vignettes that draw our attention. It includes 38 pages filled with notes, illustrations and photos, exploring some of my favourite garden compositions in my home garden, the ideas behind their planting, and the creative techniques I have used to compose them. Within the pages you will find:
Plants as the gardeners’ creative palette, and ideas for how to use them to compose beautiful and interesting garden pictures.
Seven individual garden vignettes including photos and full planting lists, and a description of the creative thinking and design techniques behind them.
The key things I consider when putting together planted pictures, including the use of contrast, light, colour, frames, canvases, and more, and how you can use them at home.
Full colour images and illustrations to demonstrate the content.
Reflections and guidance for composing a garden with heart and beauty!
I’ll see you in the garden. Colleen x
