What a thrill it is to be writing about my inaugural exhibition! Many many years of contemplation and gathering of nerve has led to this point. The past 6 months has been a series of little leaps of creative faith, this the biggest of them all.
“Unfurl” will be held at the Corner Store Gallery, Byng Street Orange from April 10 – 22. My co-exhibitor is friend and sculptor, Peter Worsley.
The name Unfurl says it all really. For both Peter and myself this exhibition is an awakening – the beginning of a new chapter of creative life and a decision to live that life to the full. No more procrastination!
In addition to Unfurl being an awakening to a personal creative path, the series of works are underpinned very much by the philosophy of The Garden Curator and reverence for the natural world around us and beneath our feet. The works each celebrate the design mastery of nature, encouraging the audience to pause, look, see.
Modern life has become a quest for perfection, a lifelong search for “big bang” contentment. When we pause and engage with our everyday surroundings perfection can be found all around us, in the unfurling of a new leaf or the markings on an insect’s wings.
Cliche perhaps, but contentment is not a finishing-line or goal to be reached, but rather a collective of moments and mindful observations.
My body of work for this exhibition has been inspired by this collective. Daily observations and pauses have been interpreted in finely detailed works in paper, french wire and thread, with a few little irresistible found objects like the tiniest little hands from vintage pocket watches. These three dimensional illustrations include both botanical and insect elements, often together in purely imaginary forms. Each piece is mounted onto the backing paper using the finest entomology pins, the aim being for them to appear to float off the page. My interpretation of herbarium and entomology specimens!
Peter’s work is a different interpretation, though founded on the same philosophy. Robust sculptures in new and reclaimed steel pay homage to beauty in simplicity, celebrating the design mastery of nature in line and form. Botanical and insect elements continue to feature. I have a few pieces of Peter’s work in my garden, love them!
Completed works and those in progress will be posted regularly on Instagram, follow the links below, and also in The Garden Curator gallery https://thegardencurator.com.au/from-the-studio-gallery/
